2017 Meeting Presentations will be based on the BACCM – Business Analysis Core Competency Model:  Change, Need, Solution, Stakeholder, Value, and Context.  This month’s presentation is focused on VALUE.

The Business Analyst’s role in helping to choose and deploy the right solutions to maximize an organization’s performance, satisfy customers, and make and maintain a profit has never been more critical. Most BA’s recognize that the topic of business value is a complex one and it’s easy to get mired in the morass of calculating ROI or in trying to define and make visible what intangibles are relevant to your organization. For some, defining, measuring, and maximizing that value remain elusive. BA’s who are successful in this endeavor broaden their scope of action beyond the technical sphere and traditional IT levers.

This presentation will discuss how IT generates value at two complementary levels. The core asset value includes tangible items such as hardware and software, as well as softer benefits such as the IT organization’s processes and skills. IT’s vitally important value-in-use varies with a company’s core business priorities, such as whether it aims for an organizational transformation or operational excellence. A different set of metrics is needed to measure value-in-use, to account for both its economic and strategic dimension.

This presentation provides a framework for looking at business value focusing on the portfolio and project levels, using a customer-focused, data-driven process that demonstrates IT’s impact on the bottom line. We’ll discuss a proven approach that addresses key issues in today’s world—speed, uncertainty, new technologies, etc.—from an opportunity management and intangible focus perspectives.
